The Pointer, often called the English Pointer, is a breed of dog developed as a gun dog. It is one of several pointing breeds. The Pointer should be athletic and graceful. The immediate impression should be of a compact, hard-driving hunting dog, alert and “ready to let go.” The primary distinguishing features of this breed are the head, feet, and tail. Hound or terrier characteristics are undesirable for show purposes.

Grooming English Pointers is not time-consuming. Their coat is very short and needs only a quick rub with a soft brush to minimise shedding. Most country’s breed standards prefer symmetry and balance to perfect size, and most will allow an amount of variation if a dog’s size does not encumber it in the field. The approximate measurements in the United States, from the Pointer standard, are as follows:

The sizes of the body of English Pointer are different for males and females. The males dogs are 60-70 cm height and 25-34 kg weight. The female dogs are slightly small than males – 58-66 cm height and 20-30 kg weight. Pointers are even-tempered, congenial dogs happiest living indoors as part of the family. Pointers are affectionate and loyal. Their aggression level is very low to non-existent and they can happily co-exist with other dogs and often cats. Pointers are typically not territorial, although their size and bark will intimidate most people who come to your door. Pointers are very good with children, although young children and a clumsy young Pointer are often not the best combination.

The English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of gun dog. The English Cocker Spaniel is an active, good-natured, sporting dog, standing well up at the withers and compactly built. There are “field” or “working” cockers and “show” cockers. It is one of several varieties of spaniel and somewhat resembles its American cousin, the American Cocker Spaniel, although it is closer to the working-dog form of the Field Spaniel and the Springer Spaniel.

Outside the US, the breed is usually known simply as the Cocker Spaniel, as is the American Cocker Spaniel within the US. Due to the breed’s happy disposition and continuously wagging tail, it has been given the cute nickname “merry cocker”. They can be also dominant and loyal to their companion. Their health issues are typical for a purebred dog breed; however they are closely associated with rage syndrome even though cases are really quite rare. The word cocker is commonly held to stem from their use to hunt woodcock.

The breed standard indicates that the males of the breed are on average between 15.5 and 16 inches (39 to 41 cm) at the withers with the females a little smaller, growing to between 15 and 15.5 inches (38 to 39 cm). Both males and females of the breed weigh approximately 13 to 14.5 kg (28 to 32 lb). American Cocker Spaniels are smaller, with the males being on average between 14? and 15? inches (36–39 cm), and females again being smaller on average at between 13? and 14? inches (34 to 37 cm), both weighing approximately 11 to 13 kg (24 to 29 lb).

Handsome pretty English Setter male
The English Setter is a breed of dog. It is part of the Setter family, which includes red Irish Setters, Irish Red and White Setters, and black-and-tan Gordon Setters. It is a gun dog, bred for a mix of endurance and athleticism. The coat is flat with light feathering of long length or short length depending on the type. The bench or show type has a long, flowing coat that requires regular grooming. The field or hunting type has a shorter coat that requires less grooming.

The various speckled coat colours when occurring in English Setters are referred to as belton; valid combinations are white with black (blue belton), white with orange flecks (orange belton)), white with orange flecks and lighter nose (lemon belton), white with liver flecks (liver belton), or “Tricolour” which is blue or liver belton with tan markings on the face, chest, and legs.

This breed’s standard temperament is best described as a “Gentleman by Nature”. However, it can also be strong-willed and mischievous. English Setters are energetic, people-oriented dogs, that are well suited to families who can give them attention and activity, or to working with a hunter, where they have a job to do. They are active dogs outside that need plenty of exercise in a good sized fenced-in yard. Inside they tend to be lower energy and love to be couch potatoes and lap dogs that love to cuddle. Many are good around children.

A German Spaniel male dog
The German Spaniel, also known as the Deutscher Wachtelhund, is a breed of dog that was developed in Germany around 1890, and is used as a hunting dog. Descended from the old German breed, the Stober, which became popular with commoners following the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states, who required a versatile hunting dog. Stober is now a type of hunting dog in Germany with the Wachtelhund being its sole member.

The breed is not very well known outside of Germany, but was recognised by the United Kennel Club in 1996. A well built breed, its coat comes in brown shades with occasional white markings. It can be trained to retrieve game, as well as for tracking. In Canada, they are used to flush out American black bears.

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is a strong boned, muscular, medium sized gundog with long thick wavy hair. It is solidly-built which allows it to retrieve heavy game such as hares and foxes. The ears are fairly long and should reach from half way to the nose, to the tip of the nose. The size is approximately 18–21 inches (46–53 cm) at the withers. Body length, from the nose to the base of the tail is twice the length of the dogs height. Average weight for both males and females of the breed is between 44–66 pounds (20–30 kg).

A Finnish Spitz is a breed of dog originating in Finland. The breed was originally bred to hunt all types of game, from squirrels and other rodents to bears. It is a “bark pointer”, indicating the position of game by barking to attract the hunter’s attention. Its original game hunting purpose was to point game that flees into trees, such as grouses, and capercaillies, but it also serves well for hunting moose and elk. Some individuals have been known to go after even a bear.

The Finnish Spitz resembles a fox. Proper conformation is a square build, meaning that the length of the body is the same or slightly shorter than the height of the withers to the ground. The length of the body is measured from the point of the shoulder or forechest in front of the withers to the rump. Females are usually a little longer in the back than males. Both sexes should appear slightly longer in the leg than the back.

The Finnish Spitz is a double coated breed but the outer coat should not exceed 2? inches at the ruff. The undercoat is soft and lighter in color than the red/gold outer coat. The undercoat will shed twice a year, and if a Finnish Spitz is to be kept healthy, a good shedding of the undercoat when the dog is ready to “blow coat” is needed. Dew claws can appear on front and/or back feet. If back claws appear, they should be removed. The front dewclaws can be removed but since they are usually small, they generally are not removed.

Cute Field Spaniel female
The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized breed dog of the spaniel type. They were originally developed to be all black show dogs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were unpopular for work as a hunting dog. However during the mid 20th century they were redeveloped as a longer legged dog that was more suitable to be used for field work. They are now considered to be a rare breed, and are registered as a Vulnerable Native Breed by The Kennel Club.

Their fur is lighter than other spaniels and have no undercoat. Their coats come mostly in solid colours with some occasional markings on the chest. They can make good family dogs and are patient with children, but can require some sort of purpose, be it hunting or agility work in order to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive.

The standard size for a Field Spaniel is 17–18 inches (43–46 cm) tall at the withers, and a weight of between 40–55 pounds (18–25 kg). This places it roughly between the English Cocker Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel in size. Its long, silky coat comes in solid colours of black, liver, or roan. Tan points, white markings on the throat and the chest can be ticked or the same colour as the rest of the body.
